Hi Sandra--I live in San Miguel and write short-short stories. I favor activities that put my mind in neutral, like gardening and window shopping. Because my pieces are so short, I run them like little movies over and over until I can't quite contain myself, then rush to get hopefully a whole draft in one go. I tried pastels but I made such a mess!

Pastel are messy! I consider short-story writers right up there with the poets, and short-short stories? How wonderful. Thank you. I'd love to read your "little movies."

I would love to share them. My book is in the local writer's section of the library. It is called The last Parakeet and is very skinny! How is young Elizabeth shaping up? About 65 years ago I read a book called Young Bess by Margaret Irwin, and being pretty young myself I admired Elizabeth's boldness and the fact that she was not described as a pretty child. I look forward to meeting her again. Saludos, K

Hi Kate, I looked in the SMA library for The Last Parakeet and couldn't find it. Young Elizabeth is inching closer her next draft, but major changes coming up! Thankfully, I have a year. Yes, she was bold and ever so bright. I enjoyed Irwin's Young Bess, but it's time to reread it. Saludos back accha. S

Hi Sandra-Very frustrating about the library--the catalog is not helpful as it doesn't really say Local Writers. The local Writers are in the mystery room, but it might take a sleuth to find them. I did see it s skinny yellow spine there recently. I could send you a pdf or some individual stories, but I don't know if you are that keen! I am glad to hear Elizabeth is in the works and happy to be in touch. Saludos, K

Sandra, the pastel is magnificent. You could spend a little more time doing “just about anything else.”

I find that having a deadline helps. I belong to the History Quill's peer coaching program, which allows us to submit up to 5,000 words/month for critiques. I make sure never to miss that deadline!
